I have 2x Apple TV 4K - 1x gen 2, 1x gen 3 - both running tvOS 18.1. I have them configured in Home Assistant and also use atvremote to test. What happens on both is (looking at "atvremote playing" output):
play video - shows video name and that status is playing
pause video - shows video name and that status is paused
wait until screensaver kicks in - shows random input (or unknown), status paused or idle
atvremote play - the random input plays from last position (or nothing if input is unknown)
But using the Apple remote resuming the video works:
click play/pause once and the screensaver is replaced by the previously playing video, paused
click play/pause again and the video resumes
(after the 1st click "atvremote playing" still shows the random input, the video info only shows after the 2nd click)
I'm not sure what determines what the random input is. It seems to usually be the last input before the video played.
Is this expected behavior? Should I configure the Apple TVs differently, or is there a sequence of commands I should use to restore the video config before resuming it?
Let me know if there's logging that would help. I've attached the output of push_updates from both (using the Apple remote):
paused in video
click play
click pause
wait for screensave to kick in
The last entry (for gen3) and the last 2 entries (for gen2) are the screensaver kicking in 2 minutes after hitting pause. I've no idea why the steps 2 and 3, and 4 for gen2 are doubled.

[I don't know if this is a bug or a question]
