I seem to be unable to update my installation of Automatic1111....

I recently installed Automatic1111 on my windows 11 PC and it has worked fine. But when I tried to update to the latest version, I found that pull commands are failing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

looking at your directory name stable-diffusion-webui-master most likely you initially installed webui by Downloading ZIP button on GitHub's webpage and so the directory not a git repository

another possibility though unlikely is that might have accidentally deleted the .git folder in webui making the directory not a git repository

as it is not a git Repository git operations doesn't work

is it possible to make this directory into a get repository, yes

you can do so by running the following command in the webui root directory

important you must be in your webui directory before running these command

cd "<path of webui root>"

if you do not have a basic understanding of learning commands in terminal then I do not suggest you follow this guide

git init
git remote add origin https://github.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui.git
git fetch origin
git switch master --force

Explanation of the commands

1. initialize the dir as a git repo, (adding the .git dir and itit's content)
2. set the remote of the git repo as https://github.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui.git

if you're following this guide for some other project you must modify the remote URL appropriately

3. fecth data from the remote
4. switch the repo onto the master branch

--force is used so that it will automatically override any conflicting files
use different bench name other then master if you wish to switch to other branch, for example dev branch

if you're reading the guide for some other project that is NOT AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui
you MUST NOT use the command as is
you MUST MODIFY the command appropriately, especially the remote URL and branch name
also make sure your running the command in the correct directory

You nailed it. I installed git and python after I had already downloaded the file and tried another install method.
I also had to run this following command:
git config --global --add safe.directory C:/stable-diffusion-webui-master/stable-diffusion-webui-master
