Soft Inpainting is Amazing!

Stumbled over this new inpainting feature, after using lllyasviel's webui-forge and I mistakenly assumed that it had been developed by him, which is not the case, as he pointed out to me.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for making this, it is, I can't stress this enough, amazing! 👌❤️💕👍

It's in the "dev" (development) branch but not yet merged into the main code (assume it will be for the next major release).

If you're comfortable enough with python, git, switching branches/etc then it's really not difficult to switch to the dev branch, update, and then give it a whirl.

If you would need assistance doing that it's probably best you just wait until it's merged into main as you can mess things up jumping around between branches/etc.

The other option is to try it w/ the fork mentioned in the first post by pulling that and installing it - it is active in the main branch on that repo.

Or use stability matrix, to have multiple installation with easy switch version without messing git python.

what does it do exactly?? i'm having a hard time understanding the feature.
Is it different with normal inpaint feature??

It is still inpainting, but enhanced, if you so will. Rather than just differentiating between true black (#000000) and true white (#ffffff) soft-inpainting respects the grayscales in between that are btw a result of mask blur values. That's also the reason, why higher mask blur values are generally better.
True white means 100 % of your set denoising value get's applied. The nearer you get to black, the less of the denoising value get's applied. E.g. if a grayscale is right in between true black and true white, 50 % of the denoising value you chose gets applied.

That's about the magic behind soft-inpainting, I think. Please take everything I've written here with a grain of salt, as I have not looked into the code, so, this is simply based on practical observations.

Soft inpainting works fine for the v1-5 model here but does not work correctly with other inpainting dedicated models. I wonder if the settings are made only for this specific model.

I've noticed that soft inpainting barely works with dedicated inpainting models, but on the other hand it works perfectly fine with normal, non-inpainting models. It's as if normal models turned inpainting models - same feeling with better output. Try the normal checkpoints and see whether you like it.

There is a checkbox right beside "soft inpainting". Uncheck to disable.
